Mobile Games Sector On-Track to Generate $9.7bn by 2008

A new study, derived from both consumer and industry interviews, shows an increasing demand for games on mobile devices.

January 30 2004--New findings from Juniper Research show that SMS text-based games and rich-media Java-type games will together generate over $9.7bn in mobile revenues by 2008 - according to the new study, ‘Mobile Games: Text to Rich-Media Games’.

Paul Skeldon, Mobile Entertainment Analyst with Juniper Research said “games are an ideal add on service to the mobile platform and current SMS technology, which is in nearly every mobile phone user’s pocket and is well understood, is already making mobile gaming a popular and money generating service. This can only be enhanced as today’s mobile gamers begin to see the benefits of acquiring next generation handsets that deliver an ever richer game playing experience. I believe that mobile gaming is one of the key drivers of next generation networks and handsets.”

The firm interviewed over sixty leaders from mobile entertainment companies across the industry, and analysed input from over three hundred mobile entertainment end-users to formulate a unique market sizing and growth model for the sector.

Other top level findings include:

• SMS based game downloads accounted for an impressive $1.5bn last year – with Europe taking a 68% share. The simplicity and immediacy of SMS as a delivery and billing mechanism is already proving to be a powerful catalyst prompting users to download new games, extra game levels and participate in multi-player games.

• Rich-media games that require more advanced handsets with color screens, polyphonic sounds and Java/BREW capabilities are also beginning to impact the paid-for games market. This sector is forecast to grow rapidly and will account for almost 65% of the $9.7bn revenues forecast for 2008.
