| Australian Online Gaming Regulations Everywhere – but not Australia |
4/30/2001 World's best practice regulations set the standard for global gaming – except for its founders As online gaming gains approval in the home state of gambling, Nevada, it appears to represent the beginning of international approval. Everywhere that is, except Australia. Initially at the forefront of the regulated online gambling movement, Australia did an about-face and is now working to freeze the wheels it set in motion only a short while ago. Australian online gaming proponents indigently claim the Australian Government may find regulatory models that it rejected accepted in almost every developed country but its own. Steve Toneguzzo, managing director of the consultancy Global Gaming Services and chair of the Internet Industry Association's online gambling taskforce, flew to the US in order to Nevada regulators on how best to legislate for Internet gaming. "Australia's Internet gaming regulatory models have been recognized as world's best practice and most first world countries are now looking at adopting them," said Toneguzzo. He continued, "It's an absurd outcome: the fact that so many countries look like ending up with Australian regulation except Australia." Ironically, South Africa, as well as several European countries, are currently examining Internet gaming regulatory models developed by Australian States, while the Federal Government works to ban it outright, or at least for Australian gamblers. |
