Omaha Hold'Em Poker - Rules

The basics of winning a poker game were preserved in Omaha Hold'Em Poker, so a player should either have the strongest hand in the table or be the only poker player still playing. A single deck of 52 cards is used to play Omaha poker. Each poker player gets initially only 4 personal cards, then a betting round is carried out, and the poker players decide if they wish to stay in this poker game or fold after estimating their chances. After the betting round, 3 communal cards are put in the middle of the poker table (the flop) and another betting round is carried out. Then, a forth and a fifth card are added to the flop, where a betting round separates each deal. These 2 cards are also shared.

In case there are two or more poker players still in the game, a showdown takes place, meaning the players will show their personal cards. The strongest hand created from two of the personal cards combined with three of the communal cards will win the poker pot. The remaining cards have no value and don't influence the game. Texas hold'em poker is a close relative of Omaha poker, what differentiates them is that you must use only two personal cards.

The Omaha poker table

Omaha poker is played on a table that can accommodate up to 10 players. At this poker table there's usually a dealer whose task it is to deal the cards and observe that the betting is done correctly, he has no active part in this poker game. A dealer button, a small circular disc, is used in Omaha poker to signal which player is the current "dealer". Actually, since there is a real dealer, the button is only for the dealer to know where to start dealing the cards. The button is moved one spot in clockwise direction after every round.

Betting regulations

Every Omaha poker table sets its own betting limits for the game played. Most poker casinos use a pot-limit betting system, this means that when all the initial bets were placed in the pot, the highest bet available is as high as the pots' worth at that moment.

For instance: if all players put an ante of 1$ into the poker pot, and there are 4 players, the pot's worth after the initial betting is 4 dollars. Now the first player raises the bet by 1$, and now the pot's worth is 5$. If the second player wants to see the previous bet AND raise the pot by the maximum bet, he must put 1$ to see (now the pot is 6$) and his maximum raise can be 6$ (now the pot is 12$ worth). The third player wants only to call those bets, so he must put 8$ (not the pot is 20$ worth). And the fifth player wants to raise the pot by maximum, he must then see the previous bet by putting 16$ (now the pot is 36$), and he can raise by up to 36$.

If this is the first round of betting, the poker players are allowed to raise by a minimum of equal amount to the big blind bet, and maximum of equal amount to the pots' worth at the time. Players can raise only three times per hand, except for when only two players are playing (then the number of raises is unlimited). There are other kinds of betting systems such as split limit, spread limit or no limit. The beginning of the game

Before the poker cards are dealt, the poker player to the left of the player who holds the dealer button, must put in a bet, more commonly known as the "small blind" bet. The next poker player after the small bettor must then put it a bet twice the size of the small blind, most commonly known as "Big Blind" bet.

The cards should then be dealt to each of the poker players, one at a time. Players are allowed to view their cards, but must not view other poker players' cards. Then the player next to the big blind bettor should now start the betting round. The players around the table can now decide, in turns, if they wish to fold out, and then stop participating in the current hand, stay in the game, in which case they have to bet. If a player folds he throws his cards on the table towards the dealer, if a player stays and bets, he must put in a minimum amount of the big blind bet (as metioned in the betting regulatios section). When it's the turn of the small blind bettor to bet, he can decide if he wants to see the bets by putting in an equal amount to the player who raised the most up until then.

Omaha Poker is played by the "live blind" betting system, which means that if no one had raised during the first betting round, or one or more poker players call the bet, the Big Blind bettor is allowed to raise when his turn comes. This poker player must declare his action, whether he does any or not. A Player who bets and then folds in the next betting round, actually loses all his bets up to that point.

As soon as all the players have put in the pot the same amount (called), and the folders folded - the betting round is over.

The Flop

Now the dealer burns a card off the top of the deck, and puts 3 cards in the middle of the table facing-upwards. It's now the players turn to bet, starting with the first player still in the game sitting to the left of the dealer button. That player can either open the round or check (forfeit his turn), if he opens he must put in an amount not less than the big blind, And according to the betting regulations for that poker table. If he chooses to check (or "pass"), he signals that by declaring "check" or tapping his fingers on the table, the turn is then passed to the next poker player. If all the poker players around the table "checked", the money in the pot stays on for the next round, and the current hand is over. In case a poker player does open the round, the other players, in the same order, must decide if they raise, call or fold out. As soon as all the players still in the game have put the same amount in the pot, the betting round is over.

he last card

Another card is burnt, and another fresh one is put in the middle of the table with the other communal cards (this card is also known as "the river" or "fifth street").

The showdown

In case all the poker players but one have folded, the remaining player wins the pot automatically. But if two or more poker players are still in the game, and all raises were called, a showdown takes place. All the poker players showcase their cards, and the highest hand, formed according to the rules, wins the poker pot. After that the hand is over, the dealer-button is moved, all cards are collected and re-shuffled, and a new poker round begins.
